The New Mexico Chess Organization (NMCO) has decided to make quite a few changes regarding scholastic chess and the titles that are awarded. By decree of the United States Chess Federation, NMCO is the official state affiliate, meaning it is not only our right, but responsibility for awarding official chess titles for the great state of New Mexico, including scholastic titles. For the past (who even knows for how long) NMCO has delegated this responsibility to other organizations, but as decided upon at the August 26, 2018 meeting, where over 25 members, parents, and stakeholders attended, it was decided that NMCO would take back oversight over scholastic state titles. Although not required, NMCO wanted to take the pulse of the people, and put this to a vote at the annual membership meeting on November 11, 2018. Where no one spoke against it.
Consequently, NMCO will now hold the tournaments to determine scholastic state champions, and our national representatives at the Barber, Denker and Girl’s national tournaments.
On behalf of NMCO, it is my pleasure to announce Anthony (Tony) Romero the new Director of Scholastic Chess, for NMCO. Tony has really taken the bull by the horns, in a short amount of time he has designed the tournaments, put together the flyers, assembled a team, put together an outreach plan, and has preliminarily secured a site and date. He is just awaiting for final approval. He will make an announcement by the end of next week.
Join me, in congratulating Mr. Romero. We are very lucky to have him. Also, thank you to all of those who formerly who ran these tournaments for us. We are all very thankful to you and your contributions.
