New Mexico Cup
Points Calculation
The High Level
- Tournaments with large sections are worth more points.
- Participation counts for 50% of the average section weight.
- Playing in a section with a higher average player rating is worth more performance points.
- No performance or participation points are awarded for byes requested in advance.
- Beginning in 2010, we will be awarding points to the TD based on an average performance at their rating
The Calculation
- Tournament Weight: The first step is to divide the total number of players in the tournament
by the number of sections. The result is a rating for the average section size within a tournament
and is used to determine how many points will be offered in each section.
- Section Weight: The next step is to multiply the Tournament Weight by the average post
tournament rating divided by 1000 in each section. In other words, a section with an average rating
of 1500 will have a Section Weight equal to 1.5 times the Tournament Weight.
- Participation Basis: 50% of the average Section Weight from all of the sections. This is
the sum of the Section Weight for each section divided by the number of sections and multiplied
by 0.5.
- Performance Points: the number of points gained in the tournament (excluding byes requested in
advance) multiplied by the Section Weight and divided by the number of rounds.
- Participation Points: the number of games played (including forfeit wins and TD assigned byes)
multiplied by the Participation Basis and divided by the number of rounds. Everyone in the
whole tournament gets the same participation points for playing (or being available to play) in all
rounds of the tournament.
- Points: the sum of Performance Points and Participation Points.
- Rating: the weighted average of pre-tournament ratings throughout the year. This is calculated
for an individual player by multiplying that player's rating going into a tournament by the number of
games played in that tournament, summing that result for all tournaments played throughout the year,
and then dividing the total by the number of games played throughout the year. Pre-tournament ratings
are obtained from the USCF cross tables of results -- not from the ratings supplement used to pair
individuals within the event.
An Example
- The top 3 sections of the
2008 Pir Maleki
were included in the 2008 sample calculation. The sections were:
- Professor - 12 players
-
- Tutor - 25 players
- Sophomore - 32 players
The total number of players is 12 + 25 + 32 = 69. The tournament weight is 69/3 = 23.
The section average post tournament ratings are: Professor 1881.08, Tutor 1535.68, and Sophomore 1036.22
- The section weights are:
- Professor - 23 * 1881.08/1000 = 43.26
- Tutor - 23 * 1535.68/1000 = 35.32
- Sophomore - 23* 1036.22/1000 = 23.83
- The Participation Basis is 0.5 * (43.26 + 35.32 + 23.83)/3 = 17.07
- Winning 2 out of 3 games in the Professor section earns 43.26 * 2/3 = 28.84 performance points.
Winning 3 out of 4 games in the Tutor section earns 35.32 * 3/4 = 26.49 performance points.
- Playing all rounds earns 17.07 participation points for any player. Playing 3 out of 4 games
earns 12.80 participations points.
- Total points would be 28.84 + 17.07 = 45.91 for 2 out of 3 wins in the Professor section or
26.49 + 17.07 = 43.56 for 3 out of 4 wins in the Tutor section.
